Industrial Mathematics Group is an initiative of mathematicians interested in cooperation with business and industry. We operate as part of Institute of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics of the University of Warsaw.
Our goal is to pursue research based on industrial applications of mathematics, use mathematical ideas in everyday business practice, and educate students of mathematics to work for the industry. An important part of our mission is to create an environment in which mathematicians and practitioners can cooperate.
Mathematics is often perceived as a field of study which is very remote from industrial applications. This is a superficial observation due to the fact that it is usually difficult to recognize the contribution of mathematical ideas to the design of the final product and organization of the manufacturing process. The OECD Report states that mathematics is an
enabling technology in the case of which
the economic impact is real, and many companies - old, as well as new - have achieved a competitive advantage through the judicious use of mathematics.
It is well known that the majority of manufacturing processes requires optimization and control, which ususally means using mathematical knowledge. Designing new products involves the selection of optimal solutions which balance opposing requirements (durability vs. cost, reliability vs. speed, and many others). Finding the balance points between such opposing requirements is much easier and less costly with the use of mathematical methods than by traditional techniques based on engineering experience.
Cooperation with us can bring measurable benefits to a business enterprise. We are open to various forms of such cooperation, starting with loosely formalized arrangements (such as support for Master thesis projects), through consultations, to the realization of full scale contracts with the industry.
